15 Minutes of Fame
presentation format for young artists

There come on the scene politicians, scientists, executive directors from the Silicon Valley... and painters. Everyone who can win the audience with an idea or an image is summoned to rise under the lime light. “15 minutes of fame” is a new format for inspiring presentations of young Bulgarian artists. For no more than 15 minutes they will have full freedom to present themselves, their work, and their vision of art as well as their future plans. “15 minutes of fame” is an opportunity for the audience to discover the work of contemporary artists in an informal environment.

But why the artist has to talk about his/her art at all? Does it go without saying; doesn’t his/her art talk instead about him/her? Not really. The artists don’t use the same well-known means that you will impeccably recognize as art any more. The artist can tell you what you have to see. Sometimes artists have something different in mind, not the thing you think. And finally, what sort of a person is the painter, we will see on the stage of “15 minutes of fame.

“15 minutes of fame” is a project of SARIEV Contemporary and Open Arts Foundation. The project is part of the SARIEV Contemporary’s platform Background: Young Artists. Partners: National fund “Culture” and Municipality of Plovdiv.

Portfolio Day

Portfolio Day is an initiative by SARIEV Contemporary for supporting young artists which started in 2016 in the framework of the project Background: Young Artists.

Visual and performance artists can participate in an open call and submit a portfolio. A professional jury selects artists to participate in the Portfolio Day. The participants have individual consultations with the jury members - established artists, curators and gallerists who give them feedback to their portfolio and advises how to develop their career and artistic practice. The goal is to help young artists to learn how to present themselves and their work, how to communicate with curators and gallerists and to introduce them to art professionals.

The jury members in the first edition in 2016 are: Pravdoliub Ivanov (artist), Luchezar Boyadjiev (artist), Svetlana Kuyumdzhieva (curator and art critic), Vera Mlechevska (curator and art critic), Galina Lardeva (curator), Vesselina and Katrin Sariev (gallerists).

Participants: Nikolay Bozhinov, Viktoria Georgieva, Eli Joteva, Stefan Ivanov, Elena Kaludova, Marica Kolcheva, Miglena Yoncheva-Nikolova, Radostin Sedevchev, Radoil Serafimov, Petko Tanchev

Plovdiv Working Visits for Curators and Art Critics

In 2015 SARIEV Contemporary launched the project ‘Plovdiv Working Visits for Curators and Art Critics’. The aim of this project is to invite international curators and critics to get to know the Bulgarian contemporary art scene. During their visits they visit institutions and museums, meet Bulgarian artists, curators and art managers, visit artist studios.

Through this project SARIEV Contemporary would like to popularize Bulgarian contemporary art abroad and support the establishment of international partnerships and collaborations.

In 2015 the traditional focus program of the fair for contemporary art viennacontemporary will be dedicated to Bulgaria. The project is initiated by Vesselina and Katrin Sariev (Sariev Contemporary, Open Arts Foundation), Elena Todorova (president of Hugo Vouten Collection), Vessela Nozharova (Art Affairs and Documents Foundation) and Iara Boubnova (Institute of Contemporary Art-Sofia).

Focus Bulgaria will be held in a 100 sq.m. space in the official exhibition hall of the fair – Marx-Halle. The project will include an exhibition curated by Iara Boubnova and Vessela Nozharova, video presentations from an open call, artists and collectors talks and discussions curated by Dessislava Dimova. The program will be accompanied by a publication and parallel events in the city.

Bulgaria’s presentation in the framework of Focus Bulgaria is a non-commercial project which aims at popularizing Bulgarian contemporary art and establishing connections between Bulgarian and foreign artists, curators, cultural managers, organisations and collectors.

Focus Bulgaria is organized by the Open Arts Foundation and Sariev Contemporary, Plovdiv in cooperation with the Institute of Contemporary Art-Sofia and the Art, Affairs and Documents Foundation. It is kindly supported by Gaudenz B. Ruf, the Ministry of Culture of Republic of Bulgaria, the National Culture Fund, Bulgaria, EVN Collection, and in partnership with the BKI Haus Wittgenstein in Vienna
